Anxieties are real — they’re demonic, creating a false sense of danger that can feel painfully genuine.

We all have anxieties, more or less, which is why we take this pill. It keeps us focused. After all, we only have one day, and the rules can’t change. I’ve trained my whole life for this; I must make this day the most perfect day possible.

The notepad reminded me why we take the pills: human beings, despite years of training, can’t control their emotions all the time. But for us, letting our emotions wander could interfere with our purpose. We’re each assigned one day to live fully and perfectly. That’s all we need to make our five years count.

Our leaders, the Intelligentsia, developed a way to transfer consciousness across bodies. They created Near End, a simulation designed to salvage human life when the real world began to collapse. In Near End, our existence continues. But Intelligentsia decided that for this to work, we can’t make mistakes. That’s why we’re tasked with finishing one job on one day — to live that day fully and flawlessly, so each five-year “life slot” in the simulation can contribute to the perfection of humanity.

Earth was in ruins before I was born, but I’ve spent 22 years in Academia to live this one day fully. I know my role is vital, and I won’t disrupt the order.

Trying really hard to have one epiphany at a time in this dystopia.
