Consistency in the age of chaos

My wife often tells me I am so consistent. I find this incredibly funny because, first of all, I am not. You can look at my Medium profile as an example. Not only do I publish rarely, but I also write about all sorts of things: from AI to meditation, my life as an immigrant in London, politics, and communication, among others. So, I am not consistent, but then again, do I really need to be?

This is the great bipolar age. Not only has social media shortened our attention spans and made our thoughts jump from one thing to another, but it has also made us realize how our brains can engage with many different topics at once. However, we must be consistent to improve and ensure that we do things properly.

First of all, that ship has sailed. Unless you are a very enigmatic writer with a large fan base, you have to be concise, direct, and dramatic to make your content readable because people have very little time to spare for each piece of content.

Returning to consistency, I love doing many things, and I’m sure many of you do too. I enjoy playing the guitar, learning new languages, reading, painting, and, of course, writing. My secret to consistency has been to dedicate just five minutes of attention to one thing at a time. Five minutes of reading, five minutes of writing, five minutes of playing the guitar — trust me, those five minutes add up, and you end up accomplishing a lot more.

I say, let’s embrace our bipolar tendencies instead of trying to fight them.
